What is flame resistant clothing made of?

These materials have built-in flame resistance at the molecular level, meaning their fire-resistant properties won’t wash out or wear off over time. Some common inherently FR fabrics include:

• Nomex® - A synthetic aramid fibre known for its high heat and flame resistance, commonly used in firefighting and industrial workwear.
• Kevlar® - Another aramid fibre that offers both flame resistance and exceptional strength, often used in combination with other FR materials.

Modacrylic - A soft, durable, and inherently flame resistant synthetic fibre, often blended with cotton for comfort and protection.

These materials are made from natural fibres, like cotton, that have been chemically treated to achieve flame resistance. Unlike inherently flame resistant materials, their protection can diminish over time due to washing and wear. Examples include:

• FR cotton -  Regular cotton material treated with flame-retardant chemicals, to slow ignition and prevent flame spread.
• Blended FR fabrics - Combinations of treated cotton with synthetic fibres, such as polyester, to enhance durability and comfort.

So what exactly makes these two materials different? 

Inherently FR materials have flame resistance built directly into the fabric’s fibres, meaning their protective properties will never wash or wear out. This makes them highly durable, as they maintain their FR capabilities for the entire lifespan of the garment. Clothing made from these materials are also often lightweight and breathable, offering superior comfort for workers who need to wear them for extended periods.

Treated FR materials, on the other hand, gain their flame resistance through a chemical treatment applied to the fabric. Whilst effective, this treatment may degrade over time with repeated washing and wear, potentially reducing the garment’s protective qualities. Additionally, clothing made from treated FR materials can sometimes feel heavier or stiffer compared to inherently FR materials, which may impact comfort depending on the work environment.

Both types of FR materials provide essential protection, but the choice between them depends on factors like durability, comfort, and workplace conditions.

When washing your flame resistant clothing, use mild detergents and avoid bleach or fabric softeners, which can damage the FR treatment. Wash in cool or warm water, instead of hot, to prevent wear.

When washing your flame resistant clothing, be sure that you don’t overload the machine. This helps to prevent excessive friction and abrasion, which can wear out the fabric more quickly.

Air drying your flame resistant clothing is preferable. If using a dryer, select a low heat setting to reduce stress on the fibres, as high heat can damage FR fabrics over time.

Frequently check your flame resistant clothing for signs of wear and tear, such as fraying, holes, or faded areas. Promptly repair or replace damaged items to ensure continued protection against fire hazards.

Keep your flame resistant clothing in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Exposure to these can degrade the fabric over time.

Where possible, avoid exposing your flame resistant clothing to harsh chemicals or solvents that can compromise its flame resistance. If unavoidable, look for FR clothing that also provides chemical resistance and protection.

Look for any signs of fraying, holes, tears, or burns. Any physical damage compromises the garment’s integrity and flame resistance, and as such, will need to be replaced.

If the fabric colour has faded significantly, it may indicate that the flame resistant properties have degraded. This is especially true for treated FR clothing, which can lose effectiveness over time.

If the fabric feels stiff or has developed cracks, it could be a sign that the material is deteriorating and may no longer provide adequate protection. If this is the case, look to replace your flame resistant clothing.

Check the seams and stitching of your flame resistant clothing for wear. If seams are coming apart or show signs of stress, it can lead to garment failure and they will need to be replaced.
